The Quassaick Creek originates in Plattekill, Ulster County, traveling through the Town of Newburgh’s Chadwick Lake, Winona Lake, and Brookside Pond, through the City’s Harrison Pond and Muchattoes Lake to the Hudson River at New Windsor’s River Road. The name Quassaick is thought to mean 'stony brook' in Algonquin.
Its waters have provided food and power to those who settled along it. The first road along the west shore had a small bridge and a toll booth at the village/town border.
Among the industries that the Quassaick has sustained through the last three centuries are woolen, linen, and paper mills, and factories making fencing, wire, cannons, and daguerreotype instruments.
